League: Collegiate Baseball
History: Although baseball first began at Notre Dame in 1892, the team had their first coach in 1897 when Frank E. Hering took the helm. In Hering’s three seasons in charge the team went 17-7, including going 4-2 in his first season. Hering’s Notre Dame squad included two future Major Leaguers. Michael “Doc” Powers went on to both become an actual doctor and catch for four different big league teams in his 11 year career, spending the bulk of that time with the Philadelphia Athletics. Pitcher Norwood Gibson’s pro career was much shorter, but did include a World Series ring. Norwood was part of the Boston Americans pitching rotation that also included Cy Young when the team won the first World Series in 1903, although Norwood didn’t pitch.
