History: The era of the 8-panel cap (as opposed to the typical 6-panel) was nearing an end by the late ’40s. In fact, we know of no MLB team to wear an 8-panel after 1948. It was not uncommon in those days for clubs to mix uniforms and hats from different manufacturers, and the Browns appear to have used both 8 and 6-panel styles in 1947 and possibly 1948. Hank Thompson became the first Black player to appear in a Browns uniform on July 7th, 1947, and former Cardinals ace Dizzy Dean came out of retirement on September 28th to pitch four scoreless innings and hit a single.
