League: International League
History: William McDonald Jr. purchased the Miami Marlins in 1960 and moved them to San Juan, PR for the 1961 season. Although a hotbed of winter league baseball, support for the Marlins was poor, and travel from other International League cities as far away as Toronto, Canada was costly. After receiving an offer for a $1 ballpark lease from city officials in Charleston, WV, McDonald packed up the Marlins on May 19th and moved to the mainland. Another fun fact about the ’61 Marlins: Joe Schultz – later of “Ball Four” fame, was the manager. Pound those Budweisers, boys!
