History: Senior Ace hurler Nick Thornton was the standout player for the Jaspers “Kelly Green” squad in 1947, the only player on the team earning All-Metropolitan Baseball team honors. FUN FACT: Manhattan College was playing a semi-pro baseball team called the Metropolitans sometime in the late 19th century when their Head Coach, Brother Jasper, noticed the students attending the game were becoming increasingly restless as the Jaspers came to bat in the seventh inning of a close game. The coach called time out and told the students to stand up and stretch for a few minutes to relieve the tension, and thus the well known baseball tradition of the “seventh inning stretch” was born. Harry Caray would be proud. The Jaspers are members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and currently play their home games at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale section of the Bronx.
