History: In 1910, the student board at Columbia University struggled to decide what name to give the potential school mascot. Many wanted “Eagles,” while others wanted Matilda, the Harlem Goat. One member finally said, “We have the King’s Crown, let us have the Lion.” The team did their best to live up to the moniker, scoring more than 10 runs in seven of their victories, including a 20-4 shellacking over Georgetown.
