League: Semi-Pro Team
History: The Black Diamond Coal Company, like many companies in the first half of the 20th century, fielded a company team. Based in Northern Colorado, the 1936 team featured Byron “Whizzer” White. White, a teenager at the time, would go on to make a name for himself as a football player, becoming a runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, and twice being named all-pro in the NFL after leading the league in rushing yards in 1938 and 1940 with the Pittsburgh Pirates (now the Steelers) and Detroit Lions. As if that wasn’t enough, among his other accomplishments White also went on to serve as a Supreme Court Justice for over 30 years.
