History: The Tigers introduced an orange old English style “D” on their home caps in 1947 (the “D” on the road caps remained white). The actual caps we have seen have the emblem embroidered onto a felt patch, which was then sewn onto the hat (rather than have the letter directly embroidered). This was a fairly common practice at the time. Although the Yankees ran away with the pennant in ’47, Detroit was “the best of the rest”, finishing second in the eight-team AL.
