History: “The Iron Man” spent all 21 seasons of his MLB career playing shortstop and third base for the Baltimore Orioles. Cal Ripken Jr.’s list of accomplishments and accolades is no small thing, having won a World Series, two Gold Gloves, twice being named American League MVP, and being a 19-time All Star, among other feats and figures. The most impressive of his accomplishments, though, is the one that earned him his nickname. Surpassing Lou Gehrig’s record for most consecutive games played (2,130 games) that had stood for 56 years, “the Iron Man” set a new record that may never be broken when he chose to end a 17-year, 2,632 game streak. His number 8 jersey was retired by the Orioles in a ceremony following the final game of his career in 2001. In 2007 in his first year of eligibility, Ripken was inducted into the Hall of Fame with 98.53% of the vote.
