History: In 1934, Babe Ruth led a squad of American League all-stars on a month-long baseball tour of Japan. Their opponents were a collection of Japan’s best amateur players, known as the “All Nippon” team. Among the Japanese stars was a 6’3″ pitcher named Victor Starffin, the son of a Tsarist Russian military officer who was in jail at the time on a manslaughter charge. Starffin played on the team in exchange for the Japanese officials keeping the details of his father’s case private.
