League: National Baseball Hall of Fame
History: Leonard is regarded as the finest first baseman from the Negro Leagues. Although he started his career with the Brooklyn Royal Giants in 1933, he is most known as a member of the great Homestead Grays teams which played in Pittsburgh and Washington, DC in the 1930s and 1940s and won nine consecutive Negro National League pennants. After the NNL and the Grays folded, Leonard played three seasons with Torreon in the Mexican League, compiling a cumulative .326 average. Although his peak playing days were before integration of organized baseball, in 1953 at the age of 45 he played ten games for the Portsmouth Merrimacs of the Class B Piedmont League. Leonard was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Negro Leagues Committee in 1972.
