History: Tiny Vernon, CA (just over the line from Los Angeles) stands out as one of the more unusual franchise locations for a high-level minor league club. The reason was that the city of Los Angeles was “dry” (no alcohol was sold), but once you stepped across the line to “wet” Vernon, anything was possible (well, almost anything). Tigers owner Peter Mier built Mier Park directly next to Doyle’s Bar, which claimed to have the “longest bar in the world”. The bar exited directly into the ballpark. Talk about convenience! We love Vernon’s pillbox style hat from 1910.
