History: One of the brightest spots for the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the early 1950’s was All-American halfback Paul Giel. He combined for 4,110 yards and 35 touchdowns rushing and passing from 1951-1953 and finished a close second to Notre Dame QB Johnny Lattner for the Heisman Trophy as a senior. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975. His talents weren’t limited to the gridiron as he was also an All-American pitcher for the Golden Gophers and opted to play Major League baseball after college when he signed with the New York Giants in 1954 for a $60,000 bonus – the most ever at the time. The Minnesota Golden Gophers are currently members of the Big Ten Conference Western division and play their home games at TCF Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
