History: Originally opened in 1968 as Florida Technological University, the school’s original mascot was a combination of an orange and an astronaut called the Citronaut, representing the school’s mission of developing support personnel for Kennedy Space Center. In 1970 the sports teams began to be known as the “Knights of Pegasus” before eventually moving on to the moniker of “Golden Knights” in 1993. The Golden Knights athletics program has claimed two team national championships, with the women’s volleyball team claiming a natty in 1978, winning the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Small College Division, and the undefeated 2017 football team having been named unofficial national champions by the Colley Matrix.
