History: A bonus baby who went straight from high school to the majors, “Mr. Tiger” first appeared for Detroit on June 25, 1953 in Philadelphia. The right fielder became the youngest player (at 20) to win the AL batting title in 1955, when he finished with a .340 average. Perhaps Kaline’s finest hour was in the 1968 World Series, when the Tigers were down three games to one and his clutch hit put them ahead in Game 5. Detroit would go on to beat the Cardinals in seven games, with Kaline hitting .379 and driving in eight runs in the series. Kaline was an 18-time All Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner. He was inducted into the Hall in 1983, his first year of eligibility.
